Homework: Reading Logs will be distributed on Monday, April 9. Students are expected to read ~3 chapters of The Giver every night for the next two weeks! Students are asked to bring in an "artifact" to display that shows how they will preserve the memories of their community. Please send in your child's artifact by Wednesday, April 11.

Monday- 4/9 Students will launch their new unit on The Giver. Vocabulary Worksheet- We will begin working on our vocabulary sheets. Students will complete around 10 words per day in class, and should study them outside of class for vocabulary tests. Tuesday- 4/10 Students will explore dystopian versus utopian societies. View this Prezi. Fill out the student materials here. Wednesday- 4/11- Students will re-read excerpts from the text and complete a journal entry. Students will compete in a Vocab Jam. Thursday- 4/12 Students will engage in a World Cafe around the following questions: 1) How does Jonas feel during Chapter 9? How does the point of view allow the reader to know and understand what Jonas is thinking? 2) How is Jonas feeling about his future as the Receiver? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer. 3) Lowry has characters “hesitate” in this chapter? How does this affect the reader? Cite evidence. 4) The author uses flashbacks to reveal more about Jonas’s feelings for his future. Cite two examples from the text that reveal Jonas’s feelings through the use of flashbacks. Friday- 4/13 Vocabulary Test; Close Read for Theme
